European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a new visa policy that will make it easier for Indonesian citizens to enter the European Union. From now on, Indonesians making their second visit to the EU will be eligible for a multi-entry Schengen visa. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels at the Berlaymont Building. Von der Leyen stated that the visa policy aims to deepen long-term ties between Indonesia and the EU in areas such as education, investment, and social exchange. This move is part of the people-to-people connections pillar in the EU-Indonesia strategic partnership, emphasizing the building of bridges between the two regions.
President Prabowo welcomed the development and highlighted the importance of trust and shared values in building relationships. He expressed Southeast Asia’s view of Europe as a key player in global stability and a leader in many aspects of modern life. Prabowo emphasized the desire for a stronger partnership with Europe beyond trade and economics, focusing on values, solidarity, and a shared vision for the future. He also expressed hope for the finalization of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to further enhance cooperation.
With the implementation of this new visa policy and the deepening of economic partnerships, Indonesia and the European Union are embarking on a new phase of bilateral relations characterized by increased openness, strategic collaboration, and mutual benefits for their citizens. This signals a positive step towards cooperation and partnership between the two regions.
