Amnesty Hasto, Tom Lembong: Prabowo’s Prerogative for Harmony

President Prabowo Subianto has received praise for his decision to grant amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong, which is viewed as a step towards national reconciliation. This move is seen as a wise and timely response by President Prabowo to address concerns about growing societal divisions as Indonesia approaches its 80th Independence Day celebrations. Senior politician Fahri Hamzah commended the President for swiftly and thoughtfully taking this action to end social polarization and kickstart a broader reconciliation process. This decision showcases President Prabowo’s commitment to unity and harmony, especially in the face of attempts by certain groups to fuel discord. The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the amnesty for 1,116 individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, in line with Presidential Letter No. 42/Pres/072725 issued on July 30, 2025. Amnesty and abolition are constitutional prerogatives used by the President to remove legal consequences resulting from criminal convictions. Fahri Hamzah expressed hope that President Prabowo’s exercise of his constitutional powers will contribute to bringing the nation together and overcoming fragmentation.
