Nothing recently announced that they have “killed” the Glyph Interface design on their upcoming phones, starting with the Nothing Phone (3) set to release next July. The LED lights on the back of the phone used to be a unique feature of Nothing Phone.
The Glyph Interface first appeared on Nothing Phone (1) as a new way to display notifications, incoming calls, and charging indicators. This feature was further developed, for example, as a progress bar when an Uber message arrived or the camera was recording.
However, through a brief post on their X account (formerly Twitter), Nothing stated that they have “killed Glyph Interface.” In the 9-second video, the Glyph lights slowly dimmed, accompanied by a dramatic sound effect. Many speculate that this is a sign that Nothing Phone (3) will no longer use Glyph Interface. However, considering their previous product releases, this decision was somewhat anticipated.
Nothing Phone (2a) only had three small LED strips at the top, which was very different from Phone (1) and (2) that were full of lights. Even the latest versions like Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro maintained a more minimalist design.
Despite abandoning the Glyph feature, Nothing seems to be sticking with its distinctive transparent design, and there are hints that they might introduce a new design concept in Nothing Phone (3). Looking at the latest teaser before the launch of Nothing Phone (3), it seems they will start using a LED dot-matrix lighting concept, which also aligns with the font type of the Nothing logo.
If it sounds familiar, the concept might be similar to the back panel of the ASUS ROG Phone 9. The LED dot matrix can be customized not only to display text but also images and other icons. It’s all just speculation for now, but what do you think about it?
